Construction Trades Technology
The State of Ohio predicts that between 1998 and 2008 the number of jobs in construction careers is expected to grow by 14.4%. Occupations in the construction field will generate more than 98,000 job openings over the decade. These job openings will result in part from the creation of about 43,000 new jobs. The remaining openings will be replacements for the current ageing workforce. The Production Maintenance and Operation fields will have more than 165,000 job openings. Entry-level skills for all of these jobs are found in the Construction Trades Program.

The Construction Trades Technology Program is a two-year course. The students spend over half of their time in a professionally monitored “Hands On” approach to skill enhancement. Once the skills and techniques have been discussed and demonstrated, the students will put them to use on related projects.

Importance is placed on allowing the student to experience a professional working environment. An even greater importance is placed on learning how to work safely on a job and with over 25 electric, pneumatic, and hand tools. The core of the program is exposing students to entry-level construction and building maintenance through task performance.

The Construction Trades Technology Program offers exposure to Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Drywall, Paint, Concrete, Masonry, Windows and Doors, Metal Studs, and more.

The Ohio Department of Education estimates that workers with one year of training earn between $10 and $15 hourly in the construction trades. For training beyond one year the average jumps to $15 to $20 per hour. Training that includes apprenticeship or Technical College may earn a worker upwards of $25 hourly.

Students may replace lab time in the second year with “On the job” training and receive full high school credit along with a paycheck.
