The Mad River Local School District provides special education services to children with disabilities to meet their unique needs. Mad River offers a continuum of programs and services for young people who may need special education services. These educational programs are provided in a variety of settings.
Students must be identified as in need of special education through a referral and evaluation process. The Special Education Department provides balanced and comprehensive programs in order to give students knowledge, strategies and opportunities to become problem solvers, decision-makers, productive citizens and lifelong earners.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the nation’s special education law. IDEA requires states to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). The Mad River School District provides a variety of services for those individuals falling within the IDEA guidelines.
Once a student has been assessed, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is held to determine a student's eligibility for services. What is an IEP? An IEP is an Individualized Education Program and is the written plan for the education of a student who has a disability or is gifted. The IEP is based on the individual student's needs and describes the special help the student will receive in school.
