The State Superintendent’s Schools of Promise program, administered by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), recognizes schools across Ohio that are demonstrating high achievement in reading and mathematics for all groups of students. Students in these schools met or exceeded the state standard of 75 percent passage in reading and/or mathematics for the school year 2007-2008. In Schools of Promise, all student groups meet the federal requirement of Adequate Yearly Progress.
“Ohio's stubborn battle with achievement gaps has yet to be won, but these schools are beating the odds and show we are making progress,” State Superintendent Susan Tave Zelman said. “We must continue to fight to ensure that all students in this state, regardless of their zip code, income or race receive the high quality education they deserve.”
Seventy-seven schools met the award criteria in reading, 18 in mathematics, and 51 in both reading and mathematics. Eleven schools are Schools of Promise for the fifth time; 12 were identified for the fourth time; 20 were identified for the third time; and another 37 received recognition for the second time.
This is the third year that Virginia Stevenson has been recognized as a School of Promise.
