Stevenson serves children from kindergarten through fourth grade. Many Stevenson students are children of military families.
We place great importance on having students actively involved in learning. We are using Baldrige strategies to enable students to become actively engaged in setting learning goals and working to achieve them. Students work in a variety of group settings and enjoy a wide range of experiences. Reading is emphasized throughout all curriculum areas and students learn to set personal reading goals. The use of Accelerated Reader along with teacher / student conferences assists students in tracking their own reading progress.
Teachers work in harmony to provide rich experiences for children. Teachers specializing in Title I reading and math, Academically Gifted and Special Education , music and physical education and our School Therapist, support the work of classroom teachers in a variety of group settings. A part-time support staff includes a nurse, psychologist, and speech pathologist.
Special Projects or activities have included: Artists in Residence Programs, Entrepreneur Fair or Career Day, Ohio History Celebration, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Book Distributions and activities, Dayton Philharmonic Ensemble concerts, Student Choir, grade level music programs, and Family Reading and Math Nights. With the assistance of an Ohio Reads Grant we are able to provide additional in-school tutoring from experienced teachers.
Committed parent and business volunteers enrich learning at Stevenson. The PTO financially supports many school programs and volunteers hours of classroom service. Many volunteer hours provide assistance to students and teachers. We absolutely could not provide all we do without the wonderful assistance of our volunteers.
Our staff believes it is the shared responsibility of the adults at home, at school, and in the community to help children learn to be responsible for the growth of their minds, characters and selves. At Stevenson students are challenged to set high expectations and are provided the tools to help achieve them. We nurture youngsters to respect and care for others. The staff stimulates children to develop personal responsibility and assists them in adapting to change in a secure, child-centered environment.
