MRLS Structured Literacy Program

Literacy is the Responsibility of Everyone

Mad River Local Schools has made great strides in adopting Language Arts curricula that support the Science of Reading and a Structured Literacy approach to instruction. This instruction is explicit, systematic, and cumulative and integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade:

In grades K-2 , our Structured Literacy Program encompasses the following curricula:

  • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Instruction - Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, which are called phonemes. A child who is phonemically aware can isolate, manipulate, blend, and segment the sounds into spoken and written words. Heggerty is a daily phonemic awareness curriculum that provides opportunities to develop these skills.
